Lagged and dormant season climate better predict plant vital rates than climate during the growing season

چکیده

Understanding the effects of climate on vital rates (e.g., survival, development, reproduction) and dynamics natural populations is a long-standing quest in ecology, with ever-increasing relevance face change. However, linking drivers to demographic processes requires identifying appropriate time windows during which influences rates. Researchers often do not have access long-term data required test large number windows, are thus forced make priori choices. In this study, we first synthesize literature assess current choices employed studies performed 104 plant species that link responses. Second, use sliding-window approach investigate combination temporal window best predictive ability for four perennial each over decade (Helianthella quinquenervis, Frasera speciosa, Cylindriopuntia imbricata, Cryptantha flava). Our review shows most consider only year preceding measurement rate(s) interest, focus annual or growing season scales. contrast, our analysis out 13 selected align with, similar to, season. For many rates, lagged more than 1 up 4 years before rate. results demonstrate these species, outside norm. study suggests considering climatic predictors fall recent will improve understanding how affects population dynamics.

The impacts of climate change and meteorological factors on pollen season indicators of allergenic plant taxa

Pollen respiratory allergies have been increasing in prevalence over the last two decades, partly as the result of the impact of climate change. For many allergenic trees, grass and weed species, increased pollen production and prolonged pollination period result in long-term increased abundance of pollen allergens in the atmosphere; earlier shifts of airborne pollen grains and prolonged exposu...

Climate variability, climate change and the Australian snow season

‘Alpine systems are generally considered to be among the most vulnerable to future climate change’ (Hughes 2003), and changes in snow depth and cover in the Australian mountains would likely affect many animals. For instance, the Pygmy Possum depends on snow cover for stable, low temperatures during hibernation (Walter and Broome 1998). In years of shallow snow cover populations of Dusky Antech...

Growing Season Temperatures in Europe and Climate Forcings Over the Past 1400 Years

BACKGROUND The lack of instrumental data before the mid-19th-century limits our understanding of present warming trends. In the absence of direct measurements, we used proxies that are natural or historical archives recording past climatic changes. A gridded reconstruction of spring-summer temperature was produced for Europe based on tree-rings, documentaries, pollen assemblages and ice cores. ...

Historical changes of temperature and vapor pressure deficit during the crop growing season in Iran

Climate change variables have rarely been analyzed specifically for the growing season of crops. In this study, changes in minimum (Tmin) and maximum temperature (Tmax), daily maximum saturated vapor pressure (VPsat) and estimated daily VPD weighted for transpiration (VPDtran) were examined at five locations in Iran over 40 years during the growing seasons of chickpea and maize. The results of ...

Winter climate change affects growing-season soil microbial biomass and activity in northern hardwood forests.

Understanding the responses of terrestrial ecosystems to global change remains a major challenge of ecological research. We exploited a natural elevation gradient in a northern hardwood forest to determine how reductions in snow accumulation, expected with climate change, directly affect dynamics of soil winter frost, and indirectly soil microbial biomass and activity during the growing season....
